Obituary for Fred Monroe Wilson

Fred M. Wilson II, M.D., 72, passed away August 23, 2013. He was the eldest child of the late Dr. Fred and Elizabeth Wilson. He married Toni Pemberton on August 28, 1964. Fred loved the outdoors-camping, hiking and bird watching, and also enjoyed photography, performing magic, playing the guitar and piano, and listening to different music genres. Boy Scouts was a vital part of his life; he belonged to the Boy Scouts of America, National Eagle Scout Association, and was a Scout Leader.
Fred graduated from North Central High School, Indiana University and Indiana University School of Medicine. He was a Heed Fellow in Corneal and External Ocular Diseases at the IU School of Medicine and a National Eye Institute Fellow in Corneal and External Ocular Diseases at UC San Francisco, CA. He was employed at the IU School of Medicine and was a staff member at IU Hospitals, Wishard Hospital, Clarian Health System, and Richard L. Roudebush Veterans Administration Hospital. A dedicated surgeon, educator and researcher, Fred thoroughly enjoyed working with students. As a respected ophthalmologist, he often spoke at national and international medical conventions. He was the author of several books and publications related to corneal disease and ophthalmology. Fred served as Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve and served in active sea duty during the Vietnam War.
Family was extremely important to Fred, and his family cherished and deeply loved him. He is survived by his wife, Toni Wilson; their three children, Yvonne Hacker (Mike) of Noblesville, Jennifer DeLong (Wayne) of Noblesville, and Ben Wilson (Jodi) of Westfield; daughter Teresa Kulick (Vic) of Ohio; and six wonderful grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6 in Spitzberg Hall at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute, 1160 W. Michigan St., on the IU School of Medicine campus.
In lieu of flowers, the family of Dr. Wilson requests donations be made to the Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology to support the Ophthalmology Resident Education Fund 038MOPH125. Please make memorial gifts payable to “IU Foundation - Ophthalmology” and mail to IU Department of Ophthalmology, c/o IU Foundation, P.O. Box 660245, Indianapolis, IN 46266-0245. Please indicate “In memory of Dr. Fred Wilson” on your gift. Donations also can be made to Paralyzed Veterans of America or the American Cancer Society.
